Our History

The Art Center is a 501C(3) non-profit organization, chartered in 1972.
The Art Center is dedicated to the purpose of promoting an awareness and appreciation of local and regional artists. We provide exhibit space as well as spaces for meetings, workshops, and classes. We support an educational venue for community outreach projects that raise awareness of the rich cultural and artistic resources available in the Coastal Bend. The Art Center is home to 10 diverse local art groups and over 600 independent members not affiliated with one of those groups. Our facilities include: Galleries, workshops, Gift Gallery, artist studios, restaurant, courtyard and a fully equipped clay studio. The facility brings together four pleasures: viewing art in its seven spacious galleries, shopping in the Gift Gallery, and local artist's studio, dining in the restaurant and, of course, the creation of wonderful art. The Art Center is also the perfect location for your special event, celebration, wedding or meeting.

Coastal Bend Art Students Win State Honors in VASE

Twenty one artworks created by students from twelve area schools won honors at the 15th annual Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) sponsored by Texas Art Education Association on April 17-18, 2009 at University of Houston, Clear Lake, Texas. Statewide more than 20,395 students participated in the 22 regional VASE events with 1,783 students qualifying for the state event.

During the state event, 1,075 artworks received a rating of four and won state medals. VASE jurors look for originality of concept, technical expertise, understanding of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and the interpretation of the student's stated intent.

128 of the State Gold Medalists were selected for the highest award, inclusion in the Gold Seal Exhibitions, which travels to various cities throughout Texas during the coming year. VASE has developed a reputation for fostering quality work from high school students. Colleges and universities from across the nation recruit and offer scholarships to students who have been successful in the VASE program.

Congratulations to the 2009 State Award Winners!
