Yesterday I mailed a check to Bailey Kilns to order
a M-404-212
model $17,500 kiln
model and should easily handle the Clay Studio's
glazing needs for the next 10 plus years!
The City of Corpus Christi has APPROVED the plans
for the expansion of the Clay
Studio and construction will start before the end of
the month. Our architect/contractor is Trian
Serbu a very experienced builder and friend of the
Art Center. Plans for the expansion are posted
in the Clay Studio's classroom area.
NONE of this could have happened without the support
of all the members of this group AND the
Center's Board of Governors led by President Janie
Hoskins and Dorothy Kucera, master fund raiser and Art
Center visionary.
As construction goes forward over the next two
months, there will be an increasing need for volunteers to
help in relocating existing clay equipment to the patio and
rearranging the current kiln area and wheel room. Clay
Studio members will also construct and pay for from our
funds huge amounts of new shelving that will be needed on
the patio.
Copied below are Frequently Asked Questions about
how this expansion and addition of a gas kiln will affect
users of the Clay Studio. If your questions were not
answered, please let me know and we'll attempt to answer.
Thanks for your past, present and future support of
the Clay Studio Group!

Frequently Asked Questions- FAQS
Q- When will the gas kiln first be fired? A- July is
the goal!
Q- Will clay studio fees and clay prices go up to
support this new kiln? A-The Clay Studio Committee hopes to
be able to maintain the current fee structure thru the end
of 2008. Our rent to the Art Center will go up in August
from $300 to $500 a month.
Q- Will users be able to specify whether they want
their glaze work fired in oxidation (electrical kilns) or
reduction (gas kilns)? A- The short answer is NO. All bisque
firing will continue to be oxidation.
Q- How often will the gas kiln be fired? A- As soon
as the gas kiln is fully loaded it will be fired. It is
anticipated that this will be about weekly.
Q- Will the people doing the glaze firing today
need extra help in loading/unloading the gas kiln which
has four times more capacity than the current electrical
kilns? A- YES! Expect to be tasked to be part of a team of 3
or more members who are designated to load
and unload EACH
firing of the gas kiln. No Load/Unload- No
Firing!
Q- Will we use existing glazes in the gas kiln and
how different will they look? A- Yes and they will look
BETTER!
