Judges Remarks
I would like to thank the Art Center for the opportunity to be one of the jurors for
this years All Members Exhibitions.
I was very impressed with the quality of the work in this exhibition. It was great to see a wide range of diversity in imagery and process throughout the show. I congratulate each artist for their contribution in making this exhibition a success.
-Ben Herrera
I believe that this was one of the strongest All Members' Shows I have seen at the Art Center. yet, there were some categories that were underutilized.
The judging was difficult because may of the pieces could have done well in other categories. Much of the sculpture created in clay would have been judged in a "ceramics" category in other competitions, and some of the "mixed media" could have been judged as "sculpture."
Although the "painting" category was the strongest, I felt that many works on canvas would have been better at a larger scale. Some canvases without frames should have been stretched "gallery wrap" style for a better presentation. Thin unframed canvases do not work well.
In the "photography" category, there is a movement to use digital imagery to enhance and experiment with the images. Regardless of the enhancement, the artist must bring something else to the piece and not rely solely on the technology. Some people did this better than others.
All in all I was pleased with the quality, but see many opportunities for artists to excel in some of the categories that didn't have as many entries. Good work!
