The Cutting Edge

About the Artist

Artist Louis A Garcia of Corpus Christi, Texas is a retired U.S. Navy veteran. He served in Vietnam as a member of the Naval Advisory Group Pacification Program in the Mekong Delta.  Fluent in the Vietnamese language, Louis’ role was to meet with remote village inhabitants, explain the involvement of the U.S. military and attempt to elicit information from the villagers on the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong enemy activity.  This advisory role allowed Louis to experience the intimate and many times painful experiences in the midst of war and contributed to the development of Louis’ compassionate nature.

Louis is an Agent Orange cancer survivor who embraces life everyday with a passion to paint.  He paints in oils to reveal the beautiful compositions and colors of each special day often through en plen air painting.  His landscape paintings capture the atmosphere and moments in time and his portrait paintings reveal his care and respect by capturing each individual’s essence, spirit and radiance.

Louis’ most recent contemporary works capture exhilarating color and movement through the use of a painting/palette knife.

Louis enjoys his painting time in studio solitude but he can also be found with artist friends painting in the Hill Country of Utopia, the shores of Rockport, the beaches of Corpus Christi, the wilderness of Minnesota and at the Barbara McDowell Excellence in Art Studio located at the Art Center of Corpus Christi.

Louis’ commitment to produce art has resulted in several awards, participation in group exhibits at the Art Museum of South Texas, the Art Center of Corpus Christi, the Art Center for the Islands and a solo exhibit at the Simon Michael Gallery in Beeville Texas.  Louis has also been a judge for the South Texas Miniature Society shows and a judge for youth art in Corpus Christi and Port Aransas.

Louis is a graduate of Texas A&M Corpus Christi.  He uses his degree in psychology, business experience and his art to assist local and national non-profit organizations and fellow emerging artists.  Louis is an associate member of Oil Painters of America, the South Texas Art League, the National Association of Latinos in Art and Culture, the Art Association of Corpus Christi,  the Bay Area Art league, the South Texas Watercolor Society, the Art Center for the Islands and the Art Museum of South Texas.   Louis served as the 2006-2007 Vice President of the Executive Committee for the Art Community Center Inc of Corpus Christi, is currently a member of the exhibit committee and is a Lifetime Member of the Art Center of Corpus Christi.
